Gingerbread men decorating competition

When we ask the kids what Christmas traditions they just can't live without, one of the traditions they name is our annual Gingerbread man decorating competition. This was a tradition that my girls and I brought with us into our blended family.

Here's how it works.
Each year, I buy 2 boxes of big gingerbread men. They can be found at Walmart, Michaels and other craft stores or grocery stores. Then, on a night when everyone is home together, we break out the cookies and all of our creativity and go to work.

The rules? Make the best gingerbread man possible. After each person has finished their creation, we assign each cookie a number and post pictures on Facebook. We let friends and family vote on their favorite cookie creation. After about a week, the votes are tallied up and a winner is declared. We then reveal to the world who created which cookie.

It is so fun to see what each person creates. I am blown away by the things these kids come up with. The cookies seem to just get better and better.

We always use WAY more frosting than what comes in the box!
Here is a super easy recipe for Royal Icing I make to help decorate our cookies.

Royal Icing:

2 Cups Powdered Sugar
1/2 tsp water
1 egg white

Mix well. After mixing, if more water is needed, add 1/2 tsp at a time.
I usually triple this recipe.

It's such a simple tradition, but one that everyone looks forward to. What are the simple traditions you do with your family during the holidays?
